Music is offered as a full subject, which enables the learner who has musical ability to develop their talent truly and purposefully. The syllabus is divided into 3 components:
● Practical: solo performance, ensemble work, aural training, improvisation. (Although our emphasis is on Classical, Western Art Music (WAM), for all the written work, pupils who play contemporary music, with electronic instruments are welcome if they meet the syllabus requirements at the minimum grade)
● GKM (General Knowledge of Music) – Western Art Music with modules of African music, Jazz, Rock and Pop; listening appreciation and research.
● Theory and harmony – reading and writing music; composition.
Music is offered as a 7th and 8th subject and enables the learner who has musical ability to develop this talent.
The syllabus includes:
Solo and ensemble performance
General Music Knowledge – Western Art (Classical) Music (History of genres and styles)
Theory and harmony
Listening comprehension (understanding music through listening)
Aural training
Form and composition
FHHS offers the following practical instruments: Piano, Violin, Viola, Classical Singing, and Recorder.
Other teachers partner with us for guitar and contemporary music: Classical Guitar, Bass guitar, Drum kit (external teachers).
Tuition on instruments not offered at this School may also be taken with teachers at Beau Soleil, Kenilworth (by prior arrangement), or with other suitably qualified music teachers.
External practical and theory exams are encouraged (ABRSM, Trinity, Unisa).
