When deciding between Mathematics and Mathematical Literacy, consider your realistic academic ability, your career and study goals and personal interests.
Mathematics is more abstract and theoretical. It focuses on advanced concepts such as calculus, algebra and trigonometry.
If you are considering careers in Engineering, Physical Science, Commerce, Medicine and Technology fields, you should consider taking Mathematics to ensure you meet the requirements for university admission to those fields.
Mathematical Literacy is more practical, emphasizing everyday applications of math in real-world contexts like finances, statistics and problem-solving.
If you are considering careers in Social Sciences, Humanities, Education or Vocational fields, you may consider taking Mathematical Literacy.
Please consult the latest admission handbooks of various universities and colleges to see if you require Mathematics for admission requirements.
Any learner who gets less than 60% in Grade 9 and does not see Mathematics to be necessary for their career path, is advised to take Mathematical Literacy.
