Within the FET framework, English Home Language is a compulsory subject in which learners must achieve a minimum of 40% to pass the grade. 

The emphasis has moved away from communication and oral assessment to the more demanding skill of writing. The requirements have moved beyond mere creative writing to the higher-order skills of interpretation of content, evaluation and the learner’s ability to clarify and shape ideas.

Various texts will be studied during the three-year course, notably novels, Shakespeare and poetry. A large number of tasks must be completed, such as literary essays, tests and major examinations.
