Computer Applications Technology (CAT) is the effective use of information and communication technologies in different sectors of society. CAT equips learners with knowledge and skills to create, design and communicate information in different formats. It also makes it possible for learners to collect, analyse and edit data and to manipulate, process and present information.
The syllabus includes:
● basic operational knowledge of computer hardware and software
● accurate input and manipulation of data
● effective use of various programs (e.g. word processing, spreadsheets and databases)
● applying information management processes and skills.
The software applications taught are all Microsoft programs: Word, Excel, Access, PowerPoint; and then Notepad++ is used for basic Web design with HTML.
CAT has 2 has 2 components, Practical and Theory, both equally important as the mark weighting for each is 50%
Learners must have access to a computer at home, with an e-mail and internet facility. Microsoft Access does NOT form part of the Microsoft Office Suite package, therefore learners must purchase Microsoft Access separately to have it installed on their home computers. Access requires much revision which will be needed for practical tests and examinations.
All CAT pupils are required to have a flash stick/memory stick (minimum of 8GB) from the start of Grade 10.
