Afrikaans is one of the 11 official languages of the country and one of the two languages we offer.
The syllabus includes a general study of language and literature – with more emphasis on communication and functional language.
Afrikaans Exemption
Immigrant learners – learners who first entered a South African school in Grade 7 or a more senior grade – or nationals who have been out of the country for two or more years (at a certain stage of their school career), may apply for exemption from having to take Afrikaans. Learners who received a concession regarding Afrikaans in the GET phase must now apply for an exemption. Learners MUST offer another language, taken privately, or another subject from an approved list.

We are proud to offer another official language as an option at First Additional Language level.
isiXhosa is available to pupils with proven competence only. Learners who may be fluent in speaking isiXhosa will also have to read and write effectively.

Only learners who have passed isiXhosa in Grade 9 will be allowed to take it in the FET phase.
