Dance Studies teaches learners enormous life skills from marketing to understanding how one’s body functions. Dance Studies (DS) is divided into both practical and theory classes and complements subjects such as Life Science, Music and English. The subject is integrated - what is taught theoretically is covered practically.
DS encompasses the study of dance technique, styles, performance, choreography and dance theory: namely
● Healthcare and anatomy - how to warm up and cool down their bodies safely, in-depth study of components of fitness and anatomy, safe dance practices, identification, prevention and treatment of injuries
● Technique – pupils study a particular dance technique and also learn dances from different cultures. The dance form offered at Fish Hoek is Jazz.
● Dance history and literacy – There is an in-depth study of the history of dance forms, learners have an opportunity to watch professional dance companies from South Africa and overseas on DVD and see live dance performances. The learners study these dances and dance creators, learning about the different types of music used and other production elements.
● Performance and composition - learners will be involved in many public and school dance performances. As one of the top DS departments in the province, our calendar is full of exciting invitations to perform at the top theatres and dance events in the Western Cape. Learners will also create and present their choreography.
The purpose of DS is to prepare learners to enter higher education and work in dance-related industries as well as to develop critical thinking, problem-solving, risk-taking and team working skills.
Dance is a disciplined activity and needs lots of passion, practice and commitment. Learners should be prepared to rehearse before and after school if needed. Applicants will be required to audition. There is limited space for this subject
